- Caught mainly by bottom trawl, from large freezer trawlers

- Prior to arrival of freezer trawlers (2006 forward), much of the catch was discarded at sea due to proteolysis

- Catch data prior to 1996 are unreliable due to lack of reporting of discards. Entire tows were discarded without report often.

- Previous assessment: Grandin & Forrest, 2017 (modeling and assessment took place in 2015 for years 1996-2014)
  - Female-only, coastwide catch-age model (iSCAM)

- This assessment will include data from 1996-2019
  - Additional ageing done to cover 2015-2019 for fishery and synoptic surveys
